A Brief History of the Kisii People (Abagusii)
The Abagusii, also known as the Kisii or Gusii, are an East African community mainly found in Kisii and Nyamira Counties in Kenya. Many Abagusii also live across Western Kenya and in major towns such as Nairobi. They speak Ekegusii (Kisii language), which plays a key role in preserving their culture and identity.
According to tradition, Mogusii founded the Kisii community. The Abagusii migrated from present-day Uganda into western Kenya. Along the way, they settled near Mount Elgon and later moved to the Kano Plains before establishing themselves in their current homeland.
During migration, the Abagusii interacted closely with neighboring communities such as the Maasai, Luo, Kuria, and Kipsigis. These interactions shaped their culture through trade and shared practices. Today, their neighbors include the Luo, Kuria, Kipsigis, Nandi, and Maasai.
Traditionally, the Kisii people practiced farming as their main economic activity. They grew crops such as finger millet, sorghum, beans, sweet potatoes, and bananas. They also became well known for soapstone carving, basketry, and pottery. Through barter trade, they exchanged goods like livestock, tools, and food with surrounding communities.
Today, the Abagusii rank among the most economically active communities in Kenya. The Kisii region produces tea, coffee, and bananas and has one of the highest population densities in the country.
